Summer Adventure 2018 Day 33

We took the Suburban in for some routine maintenance, wheel rotation, lube, check the tire that was repaired and check the front alignment. The alignment was good, but the tire had to be replaced. The rock that punctured it broke 2 steel belts and there was a bubble inside.

Did I tell you Ray broke the kitchen faucet last week?  We've had to use a screwdriver to turn on the water. What a royal pain! That was better than no water. Today we went to Home Depot to look for a kit to repair it. There was one for a bathroom faucet, so we decided to buy a new faucet. I selected 2 I thought would work.

We set off then to find the City Trolley Tour. Getting there was easy and street parking right across the street. Alice was our driver. She was a real character, many of them actually, Bullwinkle, Rocky, Marge Simpson and more I can't recall now. She sang for us songs we knew, and parodies of others we recognized to enhance her narration of the tour. She was a real entertainer who knows Anchorage.

One of the most interesting places we visited was Earthquake Park. A 9.2 earthquake shook Anchorage for about 4 1/2 minutes on Good Friday, March 27, 1964. The largest earthquake in North America and second largest ever in the world. The park is situated on land where the earth slid about a mile toward the sea. We saw where the ground drops again and again. Each drop ranged from 20 to 40 feet. There were 75 homes that just slipped away.

Some other interesting things we learned are half of all the small planes are in Alaska and half of those are in Anchorage, there are 10 men for every woman here, nearly half the people in Alaska live in Anchorage. Gambling is illegal in the state,  but they have the salmon and halibut fishing derbies,  and the Nenana Ice Classic, where people buy a ticket to guess the exact date and time the ice will go out on the river.

Following the tour we enjoyed a delicious lunch at F Street Station, one of the favorites of Anchorage.
