Summer Adventure 2018 Day 8

They let us into Canada about 10:00 this morning (local time)

We arrived at Calgary West Campground and the men went straight to work on each Rv immediately after getting the rigs setup. There were headlights and taillights to be replaced, an antenna to loose and lubricate and a step motor to replace. When the chores were done we we off to find a Best Buy and a Walmart. Luckily they were in the same shopping area. Then it was time for dinner at Moxie's Grill.

Cold, Rain, Mud

It has been cold, 46, and rainy here in Shelby so I spent the day bundled up in fleece pants and a sweatshirt. It has rained since we got here yesterday so there is mud everywhere. We did go out to get a part for the hot water tank. I was not inspired to take a single picture today.

Summer Adventure 2018 Day 6

The morning started with sunshine and the temperature in the mid 50's. As we drove closer to
Shelby the temperature didn't warm, the sun was hidden by the clouds and the wind brought rain. I just want to know whose idea this was.  I did get some pictures as we drove and a couple when we stopped at a rest area. We were the first to arrive in Shelby with Don & Lora about 3 hours behind us. Bill and Pam are still making their way and should be here sometime tomorrow.

Summer Adventure 2018 Day 5

The trip continued on I-94 W to Billings from Bismarck.
The drive  was smooth the whole way. We watched as the terrain changed from the flat lands to the Badlands.
I was able to get a few good pictures along the way from the transformation of the landscape to New Salem Sue standing high above the highway and the giant metal Flying Geese sculpture.

Our overnight stay for tonight is a Pilot Travel Plaza. Not long after getting parked there came a short hail storm then the lots began filling with dozens of big trucks. According to Google, we are 1,600 miles from home.

A few shots from the oilfields as we passed by.

I liked these shots so I'm sharing with you.

Ray talked with this fella' while we  were at the Painted Canyon. Guess where he's headed! You're right...We may see him again in Alaska.

Summer Adventure 2018 Days 3 & 4

Monday we drove on probably the best road we have ever travelled. That made the day easier and so much less tiring. Our plans were to stop for 2 nights in Fargo to allow time to visit friends. Tuesday morning began with a liesurely breakfast and a text messgae to check on our planned visit. We learned our plans weren't going to pan out. We decided to move on down the road toward Shelby, MT and we stopped in Bismarck for the night.

Don & Lora are in Wyoming and Bill & Pam are in Salt Lake City; everyone plans to arrive in Shelby on Thursday. That will be when the adventure really gets underway.

Summer Adventure 2018 Day 2

Happy Mother's Day! The day started very cool and foggy  and didn't really get warm or sunny until around 4:00.  We continued on I-39 N through Illinois, into Wisconsin and finished the day on I-94 W in Maple Grove, Minnesota. The road in Wisconsin was in terrible condition, and we saw the evidence of the destruction crews for miles and miles. They had completely torn up every bit of the road down to the earth beneath.

Along the side of the road we saw what appeared to be a wooden road built with lumber that resembled railroad ties, piles of neatly stacked, freshly cut trees, large utility poles, and many construction vehicles . The wooden road provides a stable surface for the construction vehicles to maneuver in order to erect the huge utility poles. I found it interesting to watch for the progress for several miles along the way.

For tonight we're settled in at a KOA.

And the Summer Adventure 2018 Begins

Today we begin the 2018 Summer Adventure to Alaska. We took I-64W to Louisville where we got on I-65N to Indianapolis.

Google Maps let us know there was a 32 minute delay for road work and we were able to take a short detour on U.S. 60. From Louisville we headed north on I-65 to Indianapolis then west again on I-74 and finally north on I-39. Today's leg of the journey came to an end at Princess Wenona RV Oasis, where we have a pull-thru with water and electric for $20.  We completed the first 10% of the journey and I'm cold. The wind is blowing across the farmland and the temperature is 55 degrees here while at home it's a lovely 82 degrees.  What was I thinking?
