It was a long day of driving from Tok to Kluane Lake, even though it was only 225 miles. Much of the road had been recently treated to a fresh layer of chipseal which is a lot of loose, dusty gravel and where the vehicle tracks are made is craggy, like a washboard. That caused a four an a half hour drive to turn into seven rough hours. There was a brief stop at Destruction Bay while we prepared supper. A short time later we stopped at a roadside pullout where we decided to camp for the night.
The next morning we had an incredibly short drive to Fas Gas Plus where we parked for the night. It was still very early in the day, so Bill loaded us into his car and off we went to Haines, AK. After driving a few miles Bill realized we didn't bring our passports with us. We would need them to enter Alaska and return to Canada, so he turned around and back to Fas Gas Plus we headed. Now with passports in hand we were off again to Haines. As we ascended the mountain road we drove into the clouds for several miles.
We explored Haines for a few minutes before finding the Bamboo Room to have lunch. Ray said he had the best halibut chunks here. I noticed some motorcycles parked near the door; one of them looked familiar. Could it be the fellow Ray talked to in North Dakota on his way to Alaska is here in the same restaurant with us? I tried to quickly bring up this blog page to find his photo. But up here nowhere is the internet quick and by the time I found it he had already gone. I do believe it was that fellow. I wish Ray had at least asked him, and now I will never know for certain.
Haines is an Eagle Preserve where the largest population of eagles, more than 3,000 can be found. Naturally, I was happy to be able to photograph a couple of them and a few around Haines. During the drive back to Haines Jct. the clouds had lifted and we made a few stops for more pictures includng Mount Logan, the tallest peak in Canada, the second tallest peak in North America and a black bear along the road.
It was another long day of driving, but the road was in much better condition and we stopped several times during the day.
The following day we traveled to Whitehorse. As we entered the town Bill noticed a Freightliner / Cummins garage. After setting up at Pioneer RV Park, we went there so Bill could check to see if they could look at his CHECK ENGINE light on his motorhome. Normally, no one is at the garage on Sunday, but we found another angel there. He told Bill to bring the motorhome there the next morning and he would work it in to analyze the problem.
